Freedom Through Knowledge: Celebrating Juneteenth in STEM Education

Today, as we observe Juneteenth, Abacus Robotics reflects on the enduring link between freedom and education. When General Order No. 3 was read in Galveston in 1865, it marked not just a legal milestone, it opened the door to self-determination through learning. In the years that followed, literacy and technical skills became foundational tools for building independent lives and contributing to a growing nation.

At Abacus Robotics, we believe that hands-on access to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is a modern extension of that same principle. Every young person deserves the chance to learn how things work, to build something with their own hands, and to imagine a future they can shape.

Why This Matters to Us

Since 2015, Abacus Robotics has worked to bridge the knowledge gap between watching a robot work and understanding how it works. Our learners — from grades 4 through 12 — gain the kind of problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership skills that translate well beyond the competition field. But we know that opportunity is not evenly distributed. Cost, geography, and exposure all shape who gets to try robotics in the first place. That's why our work is rooted in our local community here in Haymarket and the greater Prince William region.

What We Strive To Do

Create: Students design and build VEX robots to solve real engineering challenges. Lead: Team members take ownership of projects, mentor younger learners, and present their work. Transform: Through our IronMechs competitive teams, after-school enrichment, camps, and one-on-one tutoring, students gain skills that carry them into college and future careers.

Our Ongoing Commitment

This Juneteenth, we recommit to the work that has always been at the heart of Abacus Robotics.

Freedom isn't just a moment in history. It's a lifelong practice of learning, building, and contributing. Thank you to the mentors, students, families, and partners who make this work possible.

Let's keep going. Imagine. Create. Transform.
